Adoptando una perspectiva multidisciplinaria, rastrea factores históricos, estructurales y geopolíticos para revelar el desarraigo, a menudo brutal, de personas en una región que alberga a más de tres millones de refugiados y casi seis millones de desplazados internos (PDI). Al hacerlo, enriquece nuestra comprensión de las causas e implicaciones socioeconómicas, geopolíticas y humanitarias de la migración y el desplazamiento de población. El libro está dividido en cinco partes, centrándose en diferentes impulsores del desplazamiento involuntario y el desarraigo de las personas: la primera parte cubre conflictos geopolíticos arraigados en parte en las geografías coloniales y de la Guerra Fría. La segunda parte se centra luego en aspectos de seguridad y conflictos, mientras que la tercera analiza las políticas de campamentos y refugiados, así como las agencias de refugiados. La cuarta parte destaca las cuestiones de la repatriación forzada y la trata de personas. Por último, la quinta parte analiza la dinámica de los campos de refugiados. The second part then focuses on security aspects and conflicts, while the third looks at encampment and refugee policies as well as refugee agencies. Part four highlights issues of forced repatriation and human trafficking. Lastly, part fiveanalyzes the dynamics of refugee camps.
