Este libro examina la experiencia particular de las minorías étnicas, religiosas y nacionales que participaron en la Primera Guerra Mundial como miembros de las principales potencias beligerantes: Gran Bretaña, Francia, Alemania y Rusia. Los capítulos individuales exploran temas que incluyen lealtades en disputa, internamiento, refugiados, violencia racial, genocidio y recuerdos en disputa desde 1914 hasta los años de entreguerras para explorar cómo las minorías hicieron la transición de la guerra a la paz al final de la Primera Guerra Mundial. La primera sección analiza las llamadas "minorías amigas", considerando la forma en que judíos, musulmanes y refugiados vivieron la guerra y sus secuelas.
