Este libro examina la experiencia de la raza y la etnicidad en Australia después de la desaparición del multiculturalismo oficial. El primer capÃtulo analiza el papel que ha desempeñado el multiculturalismo y el impacto de las ideas neoliberales en la formación del Estado australiano. El segundo capÃtulo analiza las discotecas de la ciudad de Perth durante la década de 1980, el perÃodo de mayor apogeo del multiculturalismo oficial, para ejemplificar cómo funcionaban la diversidad y la exclusión en la vida cotidiana. El tercer capÃtulo considera la imbricación del cristianismo en el orden sociocultural australiano y su impacto en los lÃmites del multiculturalismo, con especial atención al Islam y la experiencia musulmana australiana. Los capÃtulos siguientes analizan la experiencia excluyente de varios grupos identificados como no blancos a través de la lente de pelÃculas, música popular y programas de televisión. Jon Stratton es profesor adjunto en la Universidad de Australia del Sur. Está adscrito a la unidad Creativa de UniSA. Jonha ha publicado numerosas publicaciones en estudios culturales, estudios australianos, estudios de música popular, estudios judÃos y sobre raza y multiculturalismo. This book examines the experience of race and ethnicity in Australia after the withering away of official multiculturalism. The first chapter looks at the role that multiculturalism has played and the impact of neoliberal ideas in the formation of the Australian state. The second chapter takes nightclubbing in the city of Perth during the 1980s, the peak period for official multiculturalism, to exemplify how diversity and exclusion functioned in everyday life. The third chapter considers the imbrication of Christianity in the Australian socio-cultural order and its impact on the limits of multiculturalism, with particular concentration on Islam and the Australian Muslim experience. Subsequent chapters discuss the exclusionary experience of various groups identified as non-white through the lens of films, popular music and television programs. Jon Stratton is an adjunct professor at the University of South Australia. He is attached to the UniSA Creative unit. Jonhas published widely in Cultural Studies, Australian Studies, Popular Music Studies, Jewish Studies and on race and multiculturalism. Jon's most recent book related to the present topic is Uncertain Lives: Culture, Race and Neoliberalism in Australia (2011). |
