¿Cuándo es el momento adecuado? ¿Cómo puedo cumplir con las exigencias de una cátedra mientras cuido a una familia joven? La elección de ser madre tiene un efecto profundo en la trayectoria profesional de las mujeres que ocupan puestos académicos, especialmente en las ciencias físicas. Sin embargo, muchas mujeres logran hacer ambas cosas con éxito. En esta segunda edición, que es un proyecto del Comité de Mujeres Químicas (WCC) de la Sociedad Química Estadounidense (ACS), 40 relatos personales inspiradores describen los desafíos y recompensas de combinar la maternidad con una carrera académica en química. Todas las autoras son mujeres en diferentes etapas de su carrera y de una variedad de tipos de instituciones, tanto en puestos permanentes como no permanentes. Los autores incluyen mujeres de diferentes orígenes raciales y étnicos, que se convirtieron en madres en diferentes etapas de su carrera y que tienen una variedad de estructuras familiares. Dirigidas a estudiantes de pregrado y posgrado en química, así como a becarios postdoctorales y profesores que inician su carrera, estas contribuciones sirven como ejemplos para las mujeres que consideran una carrera académica pero se preocupan por cómo esto puede equilibrarse con otros aspectos importantes de la vida.
