Las visiones del mundo que promulgaron, su influencia en la opinión pública y su capacidad para dar forma al discurso colectivo, ya sea de acuerdo o en oposición a los que estaban en el poder, han sido subestimadas y poco estudiadas. Este volumen marca uno de los primeros intentos serios de evaluar cómo los intelectuales italianos entendieron e influyeron en el lugar de Italia en el mundo posterior a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Los protagonistas representan las tres culturas políticas clave de la posguerra: católica, marxista y liberal democrática. En conjunto, estos ensayos revelan el papel de dichos intelectuales en las redes institucionales, su impacto en la circulación nacional y transnacional de ideas y las relaciones que establecieron con una variedad de asociaciones y movimientos internacionales.
