Este libro aborda el progreso educativo, ocupacional e económico de los judíos en el mercado laboral estadounidense. Utilizando hallazgos teóricos y estadísticos, compara la experiencia de los judíos estadounidenses con la de otros estadounidenses, desde mediados del siglo XIX hasta el siglo XX y principios del siglo XXI. Los judíos en los Estados Unidos han tenido un éxito notable: de vendedores ambulantes y trabajadores de fábricas poco cualificados, claramente cerca del fondo de la escala económica, han ascendido, como comunidad, a la cima de la misma. Los artículos incluidos en este volumen, todos escritos o coescritos por Barry Chiswick, abordan cuestiones como el dominio del idioma inglés, los logros ocupacionales y los ingresos de los judíos, la discriminación educativa y laboral contra los judíos, el ciclo de vida y los patrones de participación en la fuerza laboral de las mujeres judías, y cuestiones históricas y metodológicas, entre muchas otras. El capítulo final analiza explicaciones alternativas para el nivel consistentemente alto de logros educativos y económicos de los judíos estadounidenses durante el último siglo y medio. Los capítulos de este libro también desarrollan y demuestran la utilidad de técnicas alternativas para identificar a los judíos en los datos de los censos y encuestas de los Estados Unidos en los que no se identifica explícitamente ni la religión ni la etnia judía.
