El libro se propone examinar formas aún no agotadas de impulsar la resiliencia del principio del liberalismo. Al revisar críticamente los últimos 200 años de la filosofía de la libertad, revisa el principio de libertad para revivirlo. Analiza muchos aspectos diferentes que se incluyen en sus tres temas principales: la metafísica de la libertad, la libertad cuantitativa y la libertad cualitativa. Las sociedades abiertas en todo el mundo se han visto sometidas a una presión cada vez mayor en las últimas décadas. La creencia de que a la política y a los mercados les va mejor cuando se guían por el principio de libertad enfrenta actualmente múltiples desafíos como el terrorismo, el calentamiento climático, la desigualdad, el populismo y las crisis financieras. En opinión de sus críticos, la idea de libertad ya no ofrece una orientación adecuada para afrontar estos desafíos y debería corregirse parcialmente o incluso sustituirse por completo por valores compensatorios. Frente a la reducción de la libertad a la cuestión meramente cuantitativa de cuántas libertades los individuos consideran suyas, este libro llama la atención sobre las preocupaciones cualitativas sobre cuáles y cuáles oportunidades debería fomentar la sociedad. Sostiene que, entendida correctamente, la idea de libertad nos compromete a defender y promover la libertad de todos y cada uno de los ciudadanos del mundo. It discusses many different aspects that fall under its three main topics: the metaphysics of freedom, quantitative freedom and qualitative freedom. Open societies worldwide have come under increasing pressure in the last decades. The belief that politics and markets fare best when guided by the principle of liberty presently faces multiple challenges such as terrorism, climate warming, inequality, populism, and financial crises. In the view of its critics, the idea of freedom no longer offers adequate guidance to meet these challenges and should be partially corrected or even entirely replaced by countervailing values. Against the reduction of freedom to the merely quantitative question as to how much liberties individuals call their own, this book draws attention to the qualitative concerns which and whose opportunities society should foster. It argues that, correctly understood, the idea of liberty commits us to defend as well as advance the freedom of each and every world citizen.
