Sus capítulos desafían campos de estudio demarcados y concepciones de identidad como género, identidad como discapacidad funcional, identidad como raza e identidad como agrupaciones lingüísticas o basadas en ellas. Las contribuciones adoptan una perspectiva de prácticas sociales en su exploración del desempeño, el vivir y el hacer de las posiciones de identidad a través del tiempo y el espacio. Muchas de las contribuciones adoptan una postura interseccional y la mayoría informan sobre estudios empíricos que examinan las formas en que los análisis a nivel micro de la comunicación humana natural contribuyen a nuestra comprensión de los procesos de identificación. Específicamente, estudian las formas en que los marcos teórico-analíticos sociales y dialógicos más recientes permiten atender la complejidad y dinámica de los procesos identitarios; las formas en que los entornos institucionales, los entornos mediáticos, la comunidad de prácticas y los espacios de afinidad ofrecen oportunidades y obstáculos para diferentes tipos de posiciones identitarias; y las formas en que se pueden rastrear los cambios en las posiciones de identidad a través del tiempo y el espacio. Its chapters challenge demarcated fields of study and conceptions of identity as gender, identity as functional disability, identity as race, and identity as, or based upon language groupings. The contributions take a social practices perspective in their exploration of the performance, living and doing of identity positions across time and space. Many of the contributions take an intersectional stance and the majority report upon empirically driven studies that examine the ways in which micro-level analyses of naturally occurring human communication contribute to our understanding of identification processes. Specifically, they study the ways in which more recent dialogical and social theoretical-analytical frameworks allow for attending to the complexity and dynamics of identity processes; the ways inwhich institutional settings, media settings, community of practices and affinity spaces provide affordances and obstacles for different types of identity positions; and the ways in which shifts in identity positions can be traced across time and space.
