Este libro investiga cómo se han presentado la similitud y la diferencia cultural en una variedad de formas y géneros de literatura infantil de Dinamarca, Alemania, Francia, Rusia, Gran Bretaña y Estados Unidos; desde caricaturas inglesas de la década de 1780 hasta representaciones dinámicas de la infancia cosmopolita contemporánea. Los capítulos abordan diferentes modelos de presentación de extranjeros utilizando ejemplos de grabados educativos para niños, representaciones teatrales, relatos de viajes, cómics y libros ilustrados. Los colaboradores iluminan las formas en que los textos negocian las tensiones entre el ideal de internacionalismo de la Ilustración y las identidades nacionales o étnicas discretas cultivadas desde la era romántica, proporcionando ejemplos de perspectivas culturales etnocéntricas y de relativismo cultural, así como instancias en las que las discusiones sobre la agencia del lector infantil indican cómo podrían participar eventualmente en una comunidad transnacional tolerante. |
