Este libro de acceso abierto no solo describe los desafíos que plantea la alteración del clima, sino que también presenta soluciones. Los desafíos descritos incluyen la contaminación del aire, el cambio climático, las condiciones meteorológicas extremas y los impactos relacionados con la salud que van desde el estrés térmico, las enfermedades transmitidas por vectores, la inseguridad alimentaria y del agua y las enfermedades crónicas hasta la desnutrición y el bienestar mental. La influencia de los seres humanos en el cambio climático se ha establecido a través de abundantes pruebas e informes publicados. Sin embargo, las conexiones entre el cambio climático, la salud del planeta y el impacto en la salud humana no han recibido el mismo nivel de atención. Por lo tanto, el enfoque global sobre los impactos del cambio climático en la salud pública es un área de interés relativamente reciente. Este enfoque es oportuno ya que los científicos han llegado a la conclusión de que los cambios en el clima han provocado nuevos fenómenos meteorológicos extremos, como inundaciones, tormentas, olas de calor, sequías e incendios, que a su vez han provocado más de 600.000 muertes y el desplazamiento de casi 4.000 millones de personas en los últimos 20 años. Los trabajos anteriores sobre los impactos del cambio climático en la salud se limitaban principalmente a enfoques y resultados epidemiológicos y se centraban menos en colaboraciones multidisciplinarias y multifacéticas entre científicos físicos, investigadores de salud pública y formuladores de políticas. Además, se prestó poca atención a los enfoques éticos y basados en la fe para abordar el problema. Las soluciones y acciones que exploramos en este libro involucran a diversos sectores de la sociedad civil, el liderazgo religioso y el liderazgo político, todos orientados por la ética, la defensa y la política, con un enfoque especial en las poblaciones pobres y vulnerables. El libro destaca áreas que creemos que resonarán ampliamente entre el público, los líderes religiosos, los investigadores y los estudiantes de todas las disciplinas, incluidas las humanidades, y los formuladores de políticas. |
